Achieving goals is partly about taking action but it’s also about having the right mindset and attitude for success.
Here are three keys to a winning attitude.
1. Identity
To achieve the success that you want, you need to be able to see yourself as an expert that offers solutions that other people will value. The problem is that nobody is going to come along and appoint you as an expert. You have to decide this yourself.
In his book “Winning through Intimidation”, Robert Ringer talks about the “Leap Frog Theory”.
This means that you have to be willing to tell people that you’ve got specific knowledge and skills. when you do this, you can easily “leap over” the people in the middle who also have this expertise but are hesitant to talk about it.
The fact is you probably don’t need to learn more in order to position yourself as an expert. Too many people are waiting for that “one more thing” they think they need to know before they can claim to be an expert.
You must go out and promote your expertise. You need to appreciate the value you’re delivering to your clients. You’ll probably find that they rate your expertise more highly than you do yourself.
Even if you have doubts, perception is everything and the secret is to behave with confidence – can you at least pretend you think you’re an expert?
Others will be convinced and you might just start to believe it too.
The trouble is that most business owners are so close to what they do on a daily basis that they don’t realize how much they already know.
As soon as you recognize that in yourself, you might be surprised to discover that others see you in that way too.
I’ve gone into more detail on these topics on this separate article on why ability is not enough for success.
2. Imagination
One of the keys to getting what you want is being able to imagine yourself as successful. This is nothing to do with the power of positive thinking or The Secret. It doesn’t replace clear strategies and hard work.
But the fact is many people spend all their time worrying about what might go wrong. If they spent the same amount of time thinking about how things will look when they work out correctly, they’d find a greater chance of things working out.
In his book Psycho-cybernetics, Maxwell Maltz talks about how many top sports people run successful outcomes through their mind many times before they are in the situation of having to do the real thing.
This process of mental rehearsal can work just as well in business as in sport or other areas of life.
Maltz points out that another distinguishing characteristic of successful people is their self-image. They believe in themselves.
Unsuccessful people hold themselves back because of what they believe other people think without it having any root in reality.
You need to build a picture of yourself that reflects your real abilities and potential and not your ideas of what other people think.
3. Mastery
Another characteristic of success is not trying to be good at everything.
Part of this is being very clear about your own areas of expertise, staying focused on them and being the best in those areas. Then find others to complement your skills.
But it’s also about not trying to do too many things in your business at the same time. For example, if you want to learn new ways to generate traffic for your website, choose one tactic such as pay-per-click advertising. Concentrate on that until you are getting great results and then move on to something else.
Trying to succeed in too many different areas in one time means you’re unlikely to succeed in any.
