For most business owners and independent professionals, one of the secrets of having a great lifestyle is being able to attract enough customers willing to pay prices that will give you the level of profit you need.
It sounds simple but, if you run your own business, you know it’s easier said than done.
The problem is that there are only 24 hours in the day and you have to spread yourself around a whole range of different tasks – looking after your clients, finding new ones, planning for the future and carrying out all the day-to-day duties of running a business. Each of these is a full-time job on its own.
Studying highly successful business owners and entrepreneurs suggests that a combination of two factors is needed:
- The right “success mindset” or way of thinking.
- Effective marketing that easily attracts lots of customers and lets you charge higher prices.
Maybe the first of those sounds like the usual ‘positive thinking’ psychobabble. But the reality is it’s what successful entrepreneurs do every day with fantastic results. And the rest fail because they don’t have it.
And you may not think of yourself as a marketer. But, the truth is, whatever business you’re in, marketing is its lifeblood. It keeps your business growing, and can allow you to enjoy your dream lifestyle.
The problem is that most business owners either don’t pay enough attention to marketing, or they spend so much time and energy on it that they don’t have time to make money.
However, if you follow the right process, good marketing can become a natural and enjoyable part of your day and will produce powerful results.
So let me be a bit more specific about how you can use this in your business.
I call these the 7 Keys to Profit (or the 7 ‘P’s in profit, if you prefer!)
- Psychology: Having a clear vision of what you want to achieve and taking focused action to get it.
- Proposition: Offering products and services that people want to buy.
- Positioning: Knowing who your ideal customers are and what makes you right for them.
- Persuasion: Expressing clearly why your customers and prospects should buy from you.
- Promotion: Choosing the right media where people will see your message.
- Planning: Following a calendar that sets out exactly when you will undertake regular marketing activities.
- Productivity: Earning the true value of your time and making the most of every hour of your day.
The secret of success is having the right balance of all seven factors.
Even if you are strong in one or two, it could all amount to nothing if you are weak in others.
Over the next few days, I’ll be looking at each of these elements in more detail to help you identify which, if any, you need to pay more attention to.
